| Moving to London: is it feasible?
Hi! I'm graduating this month in English Studies. I'll be spending the holidays in Peru but I have no real plan for afterwards. My dream is to work in publishing (either in agenting or editing) and the best two places are New York and London. Since I'm French, I figured moving to London would be easier than NY. On the other hand, I have no job offers so I'd be showing up with no assurance of a salary. My parents are willing to help me out at first but they're nowhere near rich and I don't want to be too much trouble. What I'm asking is, is it a bad idea to just show up in London and hope I get a job early? I doubt anyone'll give me a job without interviewing me in person since I have no work experience. I figured I'd wait tables or something in the mean time but London is expensive. Crazy? Or doable? How much should I make a month minimum to live with some dignity? I don't drive, don't party and don't have special dietary/health needs. Is it possible to work in the city and live outside of it without too horribly long a commute? I've always wanted to go live there but I want to be prepared. |

You'll need to have at least 1000 pounds for rent and living costs a month. If you're willing to go ahead and work hard you'll find it a lively, overcrowded but exciting place to live and work with lots of opportunities if you're hungry for success and to better yourself but realistically you'll have a tough time at the start. Good luck

Housing is so expensive in and around the Capital. My son-in-law worked in the City and lived in St. Albans which had a direct rail link with London. Cheaper than trying to live in London itself, but still horribly expensive from the viewpoint of us in the Midlands. However, that might be a solution for you as far as a roof over your head goes. I do wish you luck and hope that someone on here can offer some really positive suggestions. |
