I lived in Manila for a year, have been back a couple of times, and will be going back in January :) I love: - the people (amazingly friendly and generous) - the beaches and islands (great for diving and snorkeling) - the scenery - dramatic mountains, volcanoes, rice terraces, rain forest - karaoke. everywhere. - cheap and good shopping - great food - especially by the coast (fish) and in Manila - the colour, exitement and chaos of downtown Manila - getting away to quiet, pristine islands like Palawan, Siquijor, Coron - the spas (best value in Asia??) - the weather (except typhoons and hot, hot May in Manila - when it gets a bit too much...) This story for me sums up my Philippines experience: spent Christmas with 15 friends in a very remote part of Palawan. Beautiful beaches, night swimming, fantastic resort. But we didn't have enough cash to pay for it - and they didn't take visa. Still the resort cooked us a massive Xmas feast, and we had a great party - they trusted us enough to meet a friend of the resort owner in a town 4 hours down the road, to pay the full bill for 15 people. With a smile. Unbelievabley trusting and generous. |

I love the relaxed atmosphere and the chance to interact with so many friendly people. They are very accommodating and helpful. No one takes anything too seriously and you don't feel as rushed to do something. You're on Filipino time so just sit back and relax because even though you said you were gonna do something an hour ago you actually have all the time in the world. Sometimes I like this and other times it can be a real bother if you really want to go somewhere or get something done. Even eating out for a simple meal can a big deal because it takes so much effort to organize everyone involved. I also enjoy the weather, the scenery, and how affordable everything is. I have to admit though, it takes some getting used to people staring at you everywhere you go. |
