If possible, have a Filipino escort you around the city. You are much less likely to get scammed this way. Filipinos are very nice people in general but many of them are not above scamming American tourists on the streets. They tend to think we're made of money and our lives are like Beverley Hills 90210. Also, avoid using the jitneys for transportation if you can because sometimes people get held up and robbed. Taxis are cheap enough that you can get almost anywhere for an insanely reasonable price. Be prepared for everyone on the street to stare at you, it's normal. When I was there, I never felt like I was in an unsafe place. Just keep your wits about you and you'll be just fine.
Also, it should be fairly easy for you to communicate while you are there as most Filipinos know English very well. Filipinos are very family-oriented. You have to do everything with the family so expect them to be around all the time. From what I've learned they really like indoor malls, local celebrities, and Karaoke so be prepared!
